Marvel’s cinematic universe has faced numerous challenges in recent years. Since the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has expanded its film universe significantly but has struggled with a “lackluster” appeal that fails to attract audiences as it once did. For instance, in 2022, Marvel did not release any films that surpassed global box office thresholds, indicating that this cinematic universe is currently experiencing significant declines.

After Endgame, the “feast” is over
Endgame remains the pinnacle of Marvel’s cinematic achievements, as it closed a magnificent and impactful decade. However, the Marvel cinematic universe has not maintained its allure to captivate audiences since that monumental film. New characters and storylines require fresh audience engagement, but it is increasingly difficult for Marvel to regain its former glory reminiscent of its peak in the 2010s.

Many elements are overused but lack effectiveness
Phase 4 of Marvel has introduced a plethora of films, including not just movies but also series, yet many of these productions have relied heavily on humor. Even in serious projects like Doctor Strange 2, there are still numerous comedic moments that feel forced. A notable example is with the fourth installment of Thor, where audiences largely felt “disappointed,” resulting in a lack of enthusiasm for the film’s storyline. Additionally, there’s She-Hulk, which sparked controversy due to its failure to resonate with viewers despite initial excitement.

Fan favorites like Spider-Man also face limitations
As a standout character, Spider-Man—portrayed by Tom Holland—has faced specific limitations in his most recent outings. Across three films, Spider-Man lacks significant character development and distinct style that could set him apart from previous iterations, becoming somewhat of a caricature, especially compared to Sony’s latest animated films. Fortunately, the box office performance of the Spider-Man franchise remains stable, indicating that the character still possesses substantial appeal.

Box office revenue is declining
At a glance, it seems trivial, but these factors are currently affecting the overall quality of Marvel films. While Marvel does not shy away from producing lower-quality content, the box office returns of these projects remain high, sometimes exceeding expectations. This situation creates a disconnect where the studio is incentivized to produce projects that may lack substance and depth. If the established formula for success becomes ineffective, why not change it?

Lack of focus on central characters
Many of Marvel’s recent projects have become standalone films, exploring the journeys of individual superheroes. However, the storytelling essence of these films does not focus much on their core, instead shifting attention to supporting characters and plots. Marvel has used Hawkeye as a backdrop for Kate Bishop or allowed Wanda to overshadow Doctor Strange in the sequel. This approach leaves audiences with diminished expectations for the superheroes they once loved.
