Last weekend, the animated blockbuster The Secret Life of Pets took the Vietnamese box office by storm, becoming the top-grossing film in its opening weekend across Vietnam. Here are some remarkable milestones recorded since its release on July 1, 2016:
- Ranked first overall at the Vietnamese box office during its opening weekend.
- Achieved the highest revenue among animated films during its debut weekend in Vietnam since the beginning of 2016, surpassing the hit Kung Fu Panda.

These records highlight the unique and humorous filmmaking style of Illumination, which resonates well with Vietnamese audiences, capturing the hearts of both adults and children alike.
Vietnam is among the few countries where the animated blockbuster The Secret Life of Pets was released early. As of July 1, the film had just premiered in the UK, Ireland, Norway, Hong Kong, Israel, and Vietnam. The film has proven to be a box office draw, earning nearly $30 million after just three days of showing. In the UK, The Secret Life of Pets set a record for the highest opening weekend revenue for an animated film in 2016, bringing in nearly $13 million in its first three days.
This weekend (July 8, 2016), the film will officially launch in North America. Other international markets such as Europe, China, and Japan will follow suit by the end of July and early August.
On the professional review site Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds an 84% rating. Several reputable publications have also given The Secret Life of Pets positive reviews:
- Variety: “Based on the unique concept of Chris Meledandri from Illumination, The Secret Life of Pets stands out as the best animated film from the studio, thanks to its engaging storyline and vibrant animation that has the potential for endless expansion.”
- The Hollywood Reporter: “Technically, the film excels in creating delightful visuals, particularly the director Renaud’s depiction of New York, showcasing towering buildings that break free from the frame, long staircases leading to different floors, and various lifestyles. It also gives viewers a fresh perspective through a unique lens. The entire detail is crafted with such finesse that it evokes a sense of nostalgia akin to the Technicolor films of the 1950s.”
The Secret Life of Pets is currently showing in theaters nationwide.
