The Little Mermaid is currently a highly discussed film by Disney as it reimagines the beloved story of Ariel. So far, the character design of the main character, portrayed by Halle Bailey, has drawn mixed reactions. However, the story will not be overshadowed if Disney decides to stay true to its original character design.
Recently, the Disney team released the initial character design images of Ariel as interpreted by Halle Bailey. The film’s character designer, Christian Cordella, has been recognized for his work in creating the initial portrayal of the main character, although some elements have faced criticism.
In this design, Ariel’s attire is different (with a stunning look overall) and features straight hair, instead of the dreadlocks seen in the original version.
Viewers have given many compliments about the new look of Ariel. Many opinions suggest that this design allows Halle Bailey to shine, attract attention, and present a more princess-like appearance. “If Ariel looks like this, the film will surely gain more recognition,” one netizen noted.
After two weeks in theaters, The Little Mermaid has grossed nearly $350 million worldwide. In Vietnam, the film is struggling to reach its initial box office target, only earning about 11 million VND by June 9. The unfortunate aspect is that it is also competing with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which made significant earnings just on its opening day. Currently, The Little Mermaid may face the risk of being a significant box office disappointment for Disney this year.
