In the current times, the whole world is abuzz with the tragic news of the Titan submersible that met with an accident during its expedition to explore the wreckage of the Titanic, resulting in the loss of 5 passengers. This news has brought James Cameron, the director known for having participated in 33 Titanic-related expeditions, back into the spotlight.
Recently, many netizens have shared a clip from an episode of the animated series The Simpsons, which has been identified as having striking similarities to the Titan tragedy. This episode aired back in 1998, exactly 25 years ago, prompting the production team to make an official statement regarding the coincidental similarities.
According to New York Post, this episode is the 19th in the 9th season of The Simpsons, where characters Homer and Faribanks embark on the ill-fated adventure. In one scene, the characters unexpectedly discover the wreck of a submerged ship, only to find a treasure hidden inside. After retrieving a small treasure from the ship’s hold, Homer encounters a dangerous situation due to being trapped in a collapsed area.
At that moment, the oxygen levels in the submersible had dropped to alarming levels, and Homer was only able to send a distress signal to the surface before losing consciousness. Fortunately, he was rescued and later recounted his harrowing experience.
The 1998 The Simpsons episode shares many points in common with the Titan tragedy, leading to heated discussions among audiences. However, shortly thereafter, Mike Reiss, a writer and producer of the series, publicly clarified that it was merely a coincidence and denied any “prophetic” connection to the Titan tragedy. At the same time, Reiss explained that the episode was primarily inspired by the movie Crimson Tide, starring Denzel Washington.
“We don’t predict the future. We just create parodies based on popular films, and 20 years later, a similar tragedy occurs,” Reiss stated. Last July, Mike Reiss was one of the passengers who participated in the expedition to Titan to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.
He shared that he has… forgotten about the journey, and this detail also connects to his wife Denise, who recalls the episode of The Simpsons.
