The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has officially entered Phase 5 with the explosive release of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania on February 17. This film marks the third installment dedicated to the character Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, who takes audiences on a journey through the quantum realm, a dimension that the Avengers previously utilized for time travel in Endgame. Additionally, this film introduces Kang the Conqueror, the next major villain in the MCU, on a grand scale.
As is customary in Marvel projects, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania also features two post-credit scenes that tease upcoming MCU ventures, including the fifth installment of the Avengers series, The Kang Dynasty, set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
What Happened in the First Post-Credit Scene of Ant-Man 3?
The first post-credit scene of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania focuses on the interaction between three different versions of Kang concerning the “death of the ‘exiled’ variant” – the variant that Scott Lang confronted. They express concern about various characters residing on Earth-616 (the main timeline of the MCU) who have been continuously affecting their universe, leading to a significant war strategy discussion while revealing a major battlefield where hundreds of different variants of Kang are being assembled.
Referring to the appearance and costume design, it is possible to identify two of the three major variants of Kang: Immortus and Pharaoh Rama-Tut. The remaining variant, which features a more bizarre and scientific theme, may not strictly adhere to any version from the original comic canon. This could potentially be Prime Kang or Scarlet Centurion, with slight modifications to the character design, or it could be a completely new character created by Marvel Studios for their cinematic universe.
Rama-Tut first appeared in the Marvel universe in 1961 as an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, simultaneously serving as an antagonist for the Fantastic Four. Like Kang, he is also a time traveler, using advanced technologies from the future to rule Egypt in the past before being defeated by the superhero team.
In contrast, Immortus, unlike other variants of Kang, is a character who is not overly aggressive and often uses psychological manipulation to achieve his goals. In the comics, although Immortus sometimes collaborates with the Time-Keepers to counter other versions of Kang, he is still primarily an enemy of the Avengers or Fantastic Four. Some of Immortus’s goals have even been adapted for the character He Who Remains in the first season of the series Loki.
With the numerous variants of Kang appearing in the mid-credit scene of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, we can see that this is indeed the Council of Kangs, although this name has not yet been officially used on the big screen. In the comics, the Council of Kang is led by Prime Kang, who has selected Immortus to eliminate all Kang variants within the universe.
In the film version, it can be noted that Immortus acts as the leader of the Council of Kangs, and he certainly has no intention of confronting his other variants. This indicates that Marvel Studios may explore this council in a completely different direction compared to the original material.
Regarding the goals, like every version of Kang, they are responsible for ruling their own universes. However, since Ant-Man has defeated Kang the Conqueror, this council now sees Scott Lang, the Avengers, and all of Earth-616 as a formidable threat they must eliminate.
The Council of Kangs could be considered the first “teaser” detail for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the fifth Avengers film set to release in mid-2025. Although details regarding the plot of this film remain scarce, the mid-credit scene of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania hints at the various Kang variants.
Alongside this, the appearance of Rama-Tut could also serve as a precursor for the upcoming Fantastic Four project, which will kick off Phase 6 of the MCU. There has been speculation that the variants of Kang will appear in multiple Marvel films and may interact with different Avengers, similar to Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania. This is exactly why Rama-Tut could feasibly appear in the Fantastic Four, just as he does in the original comic storyline.
What Happened in the Second Post-Credit Scene of Ant-Man 3?
The next post-credit scene of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania continues to bring forth another variant of Kang. This variant is Victor Timely, a time-traveling inventor from the Victorian era, who makes a striking appearance with a series of technologies presented on stage. Below, the audience witnesses the appearance of Loki and Mobius, who are set to return in the second season dedicated to the Marvel multiverse. Loki recognizes Victor, as he bears an uncanny resemblance to He Who Remains, the character who has overseen the main timeline of the MCU for many years.
In the comics, Victor Timely is a brilliant inventor and a technology genius who established a city in Wisconsin named after himself. He uses advanced technology from the future to create a prosperous community, ideal for a time-traveling government plan. Alongside this, Victor also serves as a variant of Prime Kang, actively participating in the Council of Kangs. Loki has expressed significant concern about Victor Timely’s appearance, as he was warned by He Who Remains about a war in the multiverse due to the various variants of Kang.
This post-credit scene can be viewed as a teaser for season 2 of the series Loki, focusing on the TVA and the quest to track down the various variants of Kang throughout the multiverse. Victor Timely is included in this scene, though it remains unclear whether he will play a significant role or merely a “cameo” in the upcoming season. The official trailer is expected to be released in the middle of this year.
In the conclusion of Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, Marvel Studios has firmly established that Kang will continue to play a central role in future projects. With both post-credit scenes focusing on introducing different variants of this villain, it is evident that Kang will be one of the most central and important characters in the next two phases of the MCU.
Unlike Thanos, whose character was primarily explored in the blockbuster films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Kang has already made numerous appearances. With Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, the MCU has begun to lay the groundwork for the impending chaos brought by the various powerful variants of this villain within the cinematic universe, before tying the narrative threads with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
