For a long time, the robotic cat Doraemon has become a beloved symbol among many audiences. After several decades, the appeal of the manga created by Fujiko F. Fujio shows no signs of waning, partly due to the success of the animated series of the same name.
Recently, Shin-Ei Animation continued to introduce Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia (Vietnamese Title: Doraemon: Nobita and the Land of Idealism in the Sky) – the 42nd installment in the film series.
With fresh content and stunning visuals, this work quickly gained recognition from audiences both in Vietnam and internationally, currently topping the box office rankings in Vietnam.
A New Adventure of the “Cat Robot”
The film is based on the concept of Utopia – a world where everything is perfect and harmonious in the sky. According to the storyline, Utopia is a place where everyone can thrive and live beautifully, free from war and conflicts. However, every citizen in Utopia must strive to be the best version of themselves, balancing learning, enjoyment, and friendship.
It is known that Nobita seeks to find Utopia because he feels a deep sense of inadequacy, believing he is a poor student compared to his friends. Nobita hopes that this place could transform him into a completely different person, no longer a burden on his family.
However, this journey also helps the characters realize some truths that few people understand about the perfection of life in the sky.
The film’s plot is straightforward, following the usual linear structure, making it easy to watch and suitable for a younger audience. The construction of scenarios and climaxes adheres to familiar motifs from previous Doraemon films. In the end, the team also includes some twists to create unexpected moments.
A notable point in this installment is that Doraemon’s gadgets are no longer overly powerful. Compared to previous installments, the gadgets of the robotic cat tend to be more creative and nuanced. This leads to a more engaging conflict between the parties involved, making it hard to predict the outcome.
The personalities of the characters continue to be a strong point that helps the film resonate with viewers. Nobita remains the underdog, often daydreaming. Shizuka is sweet, Jaian is a bully, and Suneo tends to be arrogant and mischievous. Throughout the film, Doraemon is always by Nobita’s side to help him navigate challenges.
Like previous installments, the plot skillfully weaves in many humorous elements about friendship. After the adventure, the members of the Doraemon group become closer and more bonded with each other, creating memorable moments together.
Visuals and Music as Key Highlights
In this latest project, the production team decided to blend both 2D and 3D animation styles to build the storyline. This approach is increasingly favored, contributing to the success of many recent animated films, with The First Slam Dunk (2022) being a notable example.
With familiar elements, the characters from the manga appear closely related to their younger selves, while also embodying many youthful traits in relation to the audience’s experience.
Meanwhile, the 3D technology plays a crucial role in constructing the Utopia landscape. Each detail is carefully crafted, helping the visuals come alive, creating a vibrant world that aligns with viewers’ imagination.
The battle scenes are dynamically illustrated, interspersed with light-hearted moments to create a compelling experience for the film. Many humorous elements are also seamlessly integrated to balance the emotional resonance, drawing viewers in until the very end.
In addition to the visuals, the music also plays an important role. The songs are used effectively, enhancing the film’s emotional depth. However, the work still leans heavily on familiar plot lines. The transition and comedy elements remain conventional, lacking much innovation compared to the series as a whole.
Upon its release in Japan in March, the film quickly captured the hearts of domestic audiences. According to data from Box Office Mojo, it consistently topped the box office rankings for several consecutive weeks.
Despite being released in Vietnam rather late, its reception among local audiences has been very positive, largely due to the nostalgic appeal of the original story. The project currently competes with Disney’s The Little Mermaid and the blockbuster Fast X for the top box office spot in Vietnam. As of now, the film has grossed over 38 billion VND at the box office.
Two years ago, the previous installment Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Space War (2021) also enjoyed significant success in Vietnam, earning nearly 50 billion VND. Therefore, the potential for the latest film about the robotic cat to continue “sweeping” the local market in the near future is quite high.
Overall, Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia presents beautiful visuals and meaningful content. It serves as an ideal entertainment choice for families, especially targeting younger audiences.
