The latest installment of Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 88, has just been released, introducing new developments in the storyline. While Goku and Vegeta are busy enhancing their own powers, the responsibility of protecting Earth now falls on Gohan, Piccolo, and notably Trunks with Goten. This new Saiyan duo will be the focal point of the upcoming battles in Dragon Ball Super.
Therefore, a question that has been raised by fans of the franchise is, “Why is the main character of the Dragon Ball Super manga now Trunks?” The answer to this question has been provided through a discussion by Toyotaro, the manga’s artist.
1. Goku and Vegeta have long been the main characters, so Toyotaro, Toriyama, and the remaining staff of Dragon Ball Super proposed a simpler storyline

To clarify this question, Toyotaro explained:
“There are many ideas revolving around the new story… When we met with the series creator Akira Toriyama and the other staff, we discussed how Goku and Vegeta have been the main characters for a long time and how new stories could focus on the large-scale battles protecting Earth and fighting against celestial beings. So this time, it could be interesting to do something smaller and simpler.”
2. Toyotaro has long considered making Trunks the central character
Before Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Toyotaro had the idea to create a storyline centered around Trunks. He stated:
“I wanted to make a story with Trunks as the main character before the film ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ was discussed. That is what I am interested in. But I didn’t know if it would fit with the main storyline… I had been thinking about how I wanted to present it like a side story. I think I had been thinking about it that way for several years. After that, when we thought about focusing on someone who is not Goku and doing something different, the first idea that came to mind was a story about Trunks. I think this is finally the opportunity for me to realize that.”
3. Why does Trunks’s story have to feature superheroes?
Trunks’s storyline in Dragon Ball Super currently centers around superheroes. Goten and Trunks, in order to conceal their identities, have taken on superhero roles.
Toyotaro elaborated on this idea as follows:
“After that, we discussed that writing a story about superheroes could be a good idea. We talked about how to combine superhero elements with a story about Trunks. This is the opportunity for me to write the story that I have always wanted, and it relates to the main storyline, so I have worked hard and submitted several drafts, then we decided on the story we are developing now.”
It is truly exciting to see Vegeta’s son take the lead as the main character in the current storyline of Dragon Ball Super. Surely, fans of Vegeta will feel a sense of pride as they witness “the legacy of their beloved son” unfold!
