The popular Japanese website Anime!Anime! recently conducted a survey with the question: “Who is your favorite tsundere character?” to celebrate “Tsundere Day” in Japan.
This day is dedicated to honoring individuals with a cold demeanor but who are deeply concerned about others. The exact definition of “tsundere” refers to someone who appears aloof on the outside but is emotionally rich and sensitive on the inside.
So why do tsundere characters attract others so much?
It could be because pursuing this type of character is both a challenge and a delightful journey. Notably, these characters are often not dangerous, malicious, or overly complex; their straightforwardness and innocence are very appealing.
The term “tsundere” also became a popular phrase among fans while reading or watching Japanese media. This term emerged in 2002, describing certain female characters in a game (dating simulation) where players are challenged to win over these tough, prideful girls, who eventually turn into sweet and loving individuals.
Here are the results of the top 10 characters from this survey:
10. Maki Nishikino – Love Live! School Idol Project

9. Kei Tsukishima – Haikyuu!!

8. Arisa Ichigaya – BanG Dream!

7. United Kingdom – Hetalia

6. Ena Shinonome – Project Sekai: Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku

5. Ai Haibara – Detective Conan

4. Asuka Langley Souryuu/Shikinami – Neon Genesis Evangelion

3. Taiga Aisaka – Toradora!

2. Mikoto Misaka – Toaru Kagaku no Railgun

1. Nino Nakano – Gotoubun no Hanayome

Did you notice that the leading character in this list is Nino Nakano from Gotoubun no Hanayome?
Nino Nakano is the second of the five Nakano sisters, who has captivated fans with her vibrant personality. Nino resembles a “fierce” version among her five siblings. Her role in nurturing and caring for her family members is something she takes very seriously.
Although she has a rather combative personality and often clashes with the main character, Fuutarou, Nino is also a girl who enjoys being spoiled and occasionally cries. She has developed feelings for Fuutarou over time.
After looking through this entire list, one has to ask: is “tsundere” your type?
