As the third and final installment of James Gunn’s trilogy featuring Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and other beloved characters, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has made a remarkable impact at the box office. Over the weekend, it grossed $118.4 million in North America alone and $289 million globally.
This figure is significant but lower than the $146.5 million earned by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” during its opening in 2017, leading to some concern at Disney/Marvel. However, the film may still find its footing as it continues to perform well in theaters during its second weekend, despite a notable drop in revenue.

Specifically, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” earned $62.6 million in North America during its second weekend, marking a 47% drop compared to the previous week. Nonetheless, this latest superhero film from Marvel has achieved a total box office gross of $216.5 million in North America, surpassing the $500 million mark globally with $530.9 million. This revenue also places it ahead of Marvel’s earlier release of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which managed to earn just $475.8 million globally during its entire run.
In addition to its impressive earnings, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has also joined the ranks of Marvel films that experienced a box office drop of over 50% in their second weekend. Previous films that reached this milestone include “Black Panther,” “Thor,” “Doctor Strange,” “Iron Man,” and “The Avengers.” The 47% drop is notably less steep than the 55% declines observed for the two previous “Guardians of the Galaxy” films during their second weekends.

While it remains to be seen whether “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will ultimately achieve a total box office gross that surpasses the $863.7 million of “Vol. 2”, it’s clear that audiences are continuing to flock to theaters to see this film, driven by its quality and engaging storytelling. Director James Gunn has expressed his satisfaction, noting that the film has maintained success following its opening weekend. This may also indicate that audiences are not easily deterred by the less favorable reception of some other recent superhero films, which have not met expectations.
